To The Unknown Victim

Did you suffer badly, I wonder,
In that time of pain?
Did they destroy your soul
As easily as they destroyed your body?

When did you know you were going to die,
So terribly?
Did you hate those who killed you,
Or did you forgive them?

Did you break in your torment,
Or did you find some inner strength?
Did you give away some unknown secret,
Did you have anything to give?

Oh, your death it makes me cry so bitterly,
From the darkest depths of my heart.
For you died so needlessly
And you died so alone.

When I think of you there in your loneliness,
I feel so ashamed for all mankind.
We caused you so much suffering,
In your meagre span of life.

And now we are left behind without you,
Where you are we cannot be.
We took your life so lightly,
We took your life so free.

Did you suffer badly?
